Provincetown, Massachusetts, affectionately known as “P-Town,” has been a sanctuary for the LGBTQ+ community for over a century. Nestled at the tip of Cape Cod, this charming coastal town has become synonymous with acceptance, creativity, and celebration. Provincetown Pride, one of its most cherished events, embodies the spirit of this vibrant community, but its origins are deeply tied to the town’s history of resilience and activism.
The roots of Provincetown as an LGBTQ+ haven stretch back to the early 20th century. Known for its artist colony, Provincetown attracted writers, painters, and performers seeking refuge from the constraints of mainstream society. In the 1920s, playwrights like Eugene O’Neill and Tennessee Williams found inspiration in its liberal atmosphere, and over time, the town became known for its openness and acceptance.
By the mid-20th century, Provincetown had solidified its reputation as a safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals. During a time when LGBTQ+ people faced significant discrimination, the town offered a welcoming environment. Its small, close-knit community and cultural focus made it a refuge, particularly during the pre-Stonewall era when living openly was a challenge elsewhere.
The Stonewall Riots in 1969 marked a turning point for LGBTQ+ rights, and Provincetown became an even more prominent gathering place for the community in the years that followed. The town’s reputation as a safe and inclusive destination grew during the 1970s and 1980s, attracting LGBTQ+ visitors from across the United States and beyond.
During the AIDS crisis in the 1980s and 1990s, Provincetown played a vital role in supporting those affected by the epidemic. Many LGBTQ+ individuals came to the town seeking a compassionate and understanding community during one of the darkest periods in the movement’s history. This era solidified Provincetown’s commitment to advocacy and care for the LGBTQ+ community.
Despite its long-standing LGBTQ+ legacy, Provincetown did not hold an official Pride event until 2018. This milestone was initiated by the Provincetown Business Guild (PBG), a nonprofit organization founded in 1978 to promote Provincetown as a premier LGBTQ+ travel destination. While the town had long been a hub of queer culture, the organizers sought to create a Pride celebration that would formally recognize Provincetown’s historical significance and contemporary role as an LGBTQ+ sanctuary.
The inaugural Provincetown Pride took place from June 1 to June 3, 2018. The event was designed to honor the town’s LGBTQ+ history while celebrating its vibrant present and hopeful future. The festivities began with a rainbow flag-raising ceremony, symbolizing Provincetown’s unwavering commitment to equality. The weekend featured a Pride parade, beach parties, drag shows, art exhibits, and educational panels highlighting the history of the LGBTQ+ rights movement.
One of the highlights of the first Pride was the “Pride Sashay,” a colorful, exuberant march down Commercial Street where participants, clad in rainbow attire, celebrated diversity and self-expression. The event also included the Pride Cruise on Cape Cod Bay, offering attendees a unique way to celebrate while taking in Provincetown’s natural beauty.
