Baltic Pride is an annual LGBTQ+ festival that rotates among the capitals of the Baltic states: Tallinn, Riga, and Vilnius. Established in 2009, the event aims to promote tolerance, raise awareness of LGBTQ+ rights, and foster a sense of community across Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The main organizers are Mozaīka (Latvia), the National LGBT Rights Organization LGL Lithuanian Gay League, and the Estonian LGBT Association.
The inaugural Baltic Pride took place in Riga, Latvia, in 2009, marking a significant step toward regional collaboration for LGBTQ+ advocacy. Since then, the festival has been hosted in Vilnius and Tallinn, each city bringing its unique cultural backdrop to the celebrations. Over the years, Baltic Pride has grown in visibility and participation, reflecting the evolving societal attitudes toward LGBTQ+ communities in the region.
In 2010, Vilnius hosted its first public pride march, despite initial resistance from local authorities. The event was a milestone for LGBTQ+ visibility in Lithuania. Subsequent years saw increased participation and support, with notable events such as the 2016 march, where approximately 3,000 individuals, including international supporters, participated without serious incidents. By 2019, the number of participants in Vilnius had grown to around 10,000, indicating a significant shift toward acceptance and solidarity.
Baltic Pride has also served as a platform to challenge discriminatory legislation and advocate for the recognition of same-sex unions, particularly in Lithuania. The festival’s history is marked by both challenges and triumphs, including legal battles for the right to march and increasing international support. Notably, in 2015, Riga hosted EuroPride, making it the first time the pan-European LGBTQ+ rights event was held in a former Soviet state, symbolizing progress and the ongoing fight for equality in the region.
