Bucharest Pride 2025

Bucharest Pride, formerly known as GayFest, is Romania’s premier annual festival dedicated to LGBTQ+ rights, held in the capital city of Bucharest. Established in 2004 by the non-profit organization ACCEPT, the country’s leading LGBTQ+ rights group, the festival has grown significantly in both size and impact over the years.

The inaugural event took place from May 3 to 9, 2004, marking a pivotal moment in Romania’s LGBTQ+ movement. Initially, the festival focused on cultural events such as film screenings, art exhibitions, and theater performances, aiming to raise awareness and foster dialogue about LGBTQ+ issues in Romanian society. In 2005, the festival introduced the “March of Diversity,” Romania’s first gay pride parade, which has since become the centerpiece of Bucharest Pride.

Over the years, Bucharest Pride has evolved into a week-long celebration featuring a diverse array of activities, including seminars, debates, social gatherings, and parties, all culminating in the vibrant Pride Parade. The event has played a crucial role in advocating for LGBTQ+ rights in Romania, a country with a history of anti-gay legislation. Notably, homosexuality was decriminalized in 1996, and further anti-discrimination laws were introduced in 2000, paving the way for greater visibility and acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals.

In recent years, Bucharest Pride has witnessed a significant increase in participation. The 2023 edition saw an attendance of approximately 25,000 people, reflecting growing support for the LGBTQ+ community in Romania. The festival continues to serve as a platform for promoting equality, combating discrimination, and celebrating diversity within Romanian society.
