History

Every Pride, Every Place, Every Story

DC Black Pride, established in 1991 by community activists Welmore Cook, Theodore Kirkland, and Ernest Hopkins, is recognized as the first official Black gay pride event in the United States. The inaugural celebration, themed “Let’s All Come Together,” was held at Banneker Field and attracted approximately 800 attendees. The primary objective was to raise funds for HIV/AIDS organizations serving the African-American LGBTQ+ community in Washington, DC.

Over the years, DC Black Pride has evolved into a cornerstone event, drawing over 40,000 participants annually. It serves as a model for more than 50 Black Pride celebrations worldwide, fostering a sense of unity and cultural affirmation within the Black LGBTQ+ community.
