Concerns are rising as reports indicate that Labour may extend the ban on puberty blockers to include private hormone prescriptions, potentially leading to what experts warn could be a “lost generation” of trans individuals. Dr. Aidan Kelly, a clinical psychologist and director of Gender Plus, emphasizes the harmful implications this ban could have on trans youth seeking necessary care.
Recently, testimony presented to the High Court revealed the government’s consideration of restricting access to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) through private prescriptions. This move has sparked fears within the trans community regarding their future healthcare options.
Impacts of the Proposed Ban on Trans Youth
The current ban on puberty blockers in the UK, deemed “life-saving” by major medical organizations, restricts access to these crucial treatments due to alleged safety concerns. Presently, the only avenue for obtaining them is through NHS-commissioned clinical trials.
Dr. Kelly voiced his worries to PinkNews, stating that the lack of transparency around the formation of an expert panel to review HRT usage raises significant concerns. He fears it could devolve into a “kangaroo court” that disregards expert advice in favor of predetermined conclusions.
Expert Panel Lacking Inclusivity
The revelation of an expert working group caught Dr. Kelly and his colleagues at Gender Plus off guard. Neither NHS England nor the government consulted with Gender Plus or other private trans healthcare providers about this panel, which directly impacts their work and the lives of their patients.
“We had no idea this expert group was being formed,” Dr. Kelly stated. “It raises questions about the qualifications of those involved and their understanding of trans healthcare.”
Health Secretary Wes Streeting previously extended the ban on puberty blockers indefinitely following the controversial Cass Review, which proposed significant changes to trans youth care in England. Despite expressing regret for the fear caused by the ban, Streeting has made statements undermining the identity of trans individuals, adding to community concerns.
Dr. Kelly also highlighted the pressing issue that NGOs supporting trans youth lack clarity on the implications of the expert panel’s review. “It’s concerning that there’s no knowledge within the different NGOs about this process,” he noted.
The Crisis of Accessing Hormones
Gender Plus regularly assists trans individuals aged 16 and 17 in navigating healthcare options. Dr. Kelly warns that banning private HRT for trans under-18s could severely jeopardize their well-being. Many patients have reached out, expressing anxiety over their treatment being discontinued.
“There’s a lot of worry and distrust towards this Labour government, and this ban adds to that anxiety,” he explained.
Dr. Kelly fears that restricting access to necessary healthcare could lead to a “lost generation” of trans youth resorting to DIY methods to obtain hormones. This dangerous practice involves acquiring hormones online without medical supervision, increasing risks for vulnerable individuals.
“We’re seeing more and more under-18s attempting DIY HRT,” he said, noting that mistrust towards the NHS and government is growing due to a refusal to heed expert advice about the safety and necessity of these treatments.
Dr. Kelly urges the government to engage with private healthcare providers and clinical experts to understand the profound positive impact of hormone treatments. He highlighted that 287 UK referrals from trans under-18s were recorded in 2024 alone, underscoring the importance of accessible and informed care.
“For many young people, hormone treatment facilitates a fulfilling and happy life,” he asserted. “They are simply living their lives—working, studying, and forming friendships. The narrative that trans healthcare ruins lives is misleading; for most, it enhances their well-being.”
As discussions around trans healthcare continue, it’s vital to prioritize inclusive, expert-driven approaches that truly understand and advocate for the needs of the trans community.
