On 17 May, people in more than 130 countries hoist rainbow flags, fill social-media feeds and step into streets to mark IDAHOBIT – the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia & Transphobia. The date recalls 17 May 1990, when the World Health Organization finally de-pathologised homosexuality, striking it from the ICD list of mental disorders Wikipedia.
2025 theme: “The Power of Communities”
This year’s global slogan, announced by ILGA World and the May 17 committee, spotlights the strength we find when queer, trans, intersex and allied people organise together – whether that’s a neighbourhood mutual-aid network or an international coalition pushing for policy change May17ILGA. The theme reminds us that progress has always come from communities refusing to be silent and supporting one another through adversity.
Why IDAHOBIT still matters
-
Ongoing discrimination: Same-sex intimacy remains criminalised in more than 60 countries, and trans people everywhere face legal and medical hurdles simply to exist United Nations Population Fund.
-
Escalating backlash: From book bans to anti-trans legislation, reactionary forces are working hard to claw back hard-won rights.
-
Mental-health impact: Studies consistently show higher rates of anxiety, depression and self-harm among LGBTQIA+ people – numbers that plummet when folks feel safe, visible and connected.
IDAHOBIT is our annual reminder to push back, celebrate survival and demand better.

Five ways you can harness the power of communities today

Donate locally – If you have cash to spare, funnel it to a queer-led group in your region; small orgs stretch every coin.
-
Boost online – Share stories using

and tag elected officials. Visibility changes minds and policies. -
Skill-share – Offer what you’re good at: design a poster, write press releases, cook for volunteers, babysit during meetings.
-
Check on your people – Sometimes the most radical act is texting a friend, “Hey, I’ve got your back today.”
Looking ahead
IDAHOBIT is a single date, but its spirit can guide us year-round. When we pool our talents, resources and care, we become louder than the hate aimed at us. Here’s to building safer, braver spaces long after the 17 May hashtags fade. Because communities aren’t just powerful – they’re unstoppable.
Happy IDAHOBIT! 🏳️🌈
