Breaking Free: Ian Watkins’ Journey Toward Visibility
When Ian “H” Watkins was part of Steps, he felt confined by the expectations of the entertainment industry. “I was too scared,” he reflects. In the mid to late 90s, being openly gay could threaten your career. “Back then, you had to be single, straight, available,” he recalls. “I was living in this dark box and I couldn’t get out of it.”
After coming out publicly in 2007, Ian began reclaiming his voice. “I’ve got a lot of making up to do,” he shares. “I felt embarrassed and needed to make amends with my old self.” His latest project — an LGBTQ+ children’s book — is part of that journey.
Pride & The Rainbow Warriors: A Groundbreaking LGBTQ+ Children’s Book
Ian’s book Pride & The Rainbow Warriors is, in his words, “a love letter to my younger self.” This vibrant LGBTQ+ children’s book introduces kids to the history of Pride and the meaning of the rainbow flag, using characters that each represent one of the flag’s colors.
“If I had a book like this growing up, I wouldn’t have felt so isolated. I would have had courage, a safe place, and found like-minded people,” Ian says in an interview with PinkNews.
The book is also personal — inspired by his sons Macsen and Cybi, who are featured as characters. “We are allowed to live our authentic lives today because of those trailblazers decades ago,” he reminds us.
Accessible, Inclusive, and Educational for All
Unlike many titles that dive into labels, Ian’s approach keeps this LGBTQ+ children’s book inclusive and accessible. It teaches kindness, history, and respect without overwhelming younger readers.
“Teaching why we have Pride and who can celebrate it makes me proud that my children are becoming accepting human beings,” he shares. “It’s about kindness, awareness, education, and celebration.”
The book is just the beginning. Ian hints at more volumes with new Rainbow Warriors each year — and even potential animations. He dreams of making sure “Little Johnny in the deep, dark depths of Wales” feels seen and included.
