Its history

Amsterdam Pride began in 1996 when a coalition of gay bar owners and activists—later formalised as Gay Business Amsterdam (GBA)—decided to gift the city a floating celebration of queer visibility. Inspired by the success of the annual Rosa Zaterdag protests of the 1970s and the liberating energy of the city’s nightlife, organiser Siep de Haan proposed turning the iconic canals into a stage for equality.

The very first Canal Parade launched with fewer than fifty boats yet drew unexpectedly huge crowds packed onto bridges and quaysides. What started as a festive thank-you to Amsterdam’s LGBTQ-friendly spirit quickly evolved into a platform for activism: marriage-equality campaigns of the late 1990s, HIV-awareness flotillas in the 2000s, and intersectional themes such as “My Gender, My Pride” in 2022 all found a home on the water.

In 2006, stewardship passed to the not-for-profit Stichting Pride Amsterdam, professionalising the operation, expanding the week into a multi-program festival (Pride Walk, Pride Park, Human Rights conferences, art & culture routes) and cementing partnerships with city authorities. Attendance now rivals half a million people annually, injecting tens of millions of euros into the local economy while spotlighting global LGBTQ+ struggles.
