Its history

DC Black Pride, established in 1991 by community activists Welmore Cook, Theodore Kirkland, and Ernest Hopkins, is recognized as the first official Black gay pride event in the United States. The inaugural celebration, themed "Let's All Come Together," was held at Banneker Field and attracted approximately 800 attendees. The primary objective was to raise funds for HIV/AIDS organizations serving the African-American LGBTQ+ community in Washington, DC.
