October 16: Spirit Day — a day against bullying and in support of LGBTQ+ youth

Spirit Day is one of the most visible anti-bullying campaigns in support of LGBTQ+ youth. In 2025 it falls on October 16th, the third Thursday of October, and it calls on people, organizations, and communities to "go purple" as a public show of support.

What Spirit Day really means

It's not just a day of color or social media branding. According to GLAAD, Spirit Day is the most visible anti-bullying movement in support of LGBTQ+ youth, and especially trans and non-binary young people, who still face disproportionate bullying, anxiety, and threats to their safety.

Why the message is still relevant

Support for LGBTQ+ youth doesn't only count when it's easy or "popular." Spirit Day reminds us that public acceptance, visibility, and safety are not theoretical issues. They shape, every single day, whether a young person feels there is room for them to exist.

What we take away from October 16th

The most important message is that standing against bullying is not neutral. It takes a side. And for LGBTQ+ youth, clear public support counts for more than many adults realize.
